why your social media isn’t growing (and it’s not what you think)
Before starting River St. Studios, I tried starting an essential oil business.
Emphasis on tried.
I was very much a rookie at social media—coming off a two-year break—but I wanted to earn some extra money (hello, SAHM pinch $$).
As an essential oil aficionado, I ordered empty bottles off Amazon, filled them with my favorite tried-and-true blends, and threw together a social media page that I thought would attract ideal clients and sell my product.
Easy, right?
I wish.
After doing all the “right” things I had seen online—
reels of myself using the oils,
cute backyard photos with aesthetic flower backdrops,
tutorials…
I paired it all with those boosting hashtags and waited.
…and waited.
…and waited some more.
Months later? No sales.
At first, I assumed it was because I didn’t know enough about social media marketing. But that changed when I started talking to friends who had successful online businesses and were actually growing on social media.
I kept asking:
What are you doing differently?
And the same two words came up every time:
Consistency & connection.
The Real Reason Your Social Media Isn’t Growing
If the goal is:
social media → visibility → clients
Then why are so many small business owners posting consistently and still not growing?
Why are we spending hours creating content, chasing trends, and showing up daily… only to see little to no engagement or sales?
Here’s the shift:
It’s not about how often you post.
You can be incredibly consistent… and still be completely unclear.
And unclear content doesn’t convert.
People Don’t Follow Businesses—They Follow Clarity
The real reason your social media isn’t turning followers into clients is this:
People don’t follow businesses.
They follow clarity.
They follow connection.
After a long, exhausting day, your audience isn’t looking for perfect content.
They’re looking for something that makes them stop and think:
“Yes. This person gets me. I need this.”
And in a world of 30-second videos and even shorter attention spans, clear communication is everything.
If Your Message Isn’t Clear, People Scroll
The reality is simple:
If someone lands on your page and can’t quickly answer:
Who is this for?
What do they actually do?
Why should I care?
They’re not going to stay.
Not because your content is bad—
but because it’s not clear enough to matter yet.
What I Got Wrong (And What Most People Miss)
This is exactly why my essential oil business stayed in the red for three months.
I was spending all my time creating Pinterest-worthy photos…
while completely missing the why behind my business.
A tired mom—milk stains on her shirt, reheated coffee in hand—might look at my content and think, “That’s cute.”
But she had no idea how my
“Mama, You Got Energy” roller blend
was actually going to help her.
So what did she do?
She scrolled.
The Question That Changes Your Content Strategy
If you want to grow your small business on social media and actually convert followers into clients, you have to start asking a different question.
Instead of:
“What should I post today?”
Start asking:
“What does my audience need to hear from me right now?”
That shift changes everything.
Because now your content isn’t random.
It’s intentional.
It’s built on connection—not performance.
How to Create Content That Actually Converts
When your social media strategy starts working, your content usually includes a mix of:
Story — letting people see the human behind the brand
Value — teaching something useful or insightful (the “AAAH” moment)
Connection — making your audience feel understood
Invitation — showing them how to take the next step (without feeling salesy)
Not every post has to do everything.
But your content as a whole should.
If Your Social Media Isn’t Growing, Read This
If you’re not seeing growth on social media right now, it doesn’t mean:
✖ You’re bad at marketing
✖ You’re not cut out for business
✖ You’ve missed your chance
It might just mean your message hasn’t fully landed yet.
And that’s something you can fix.
Where We Come In
This is exactly what we do at River St. Studios.
We help small business owners stop guessing what to post
and start creating content that actually connects, grows, and converts.
Not by turning you into someone you’re not—
but by helping you clearly communicate what’s already there.
Because your business doesn’t need more noise.
It needs a message that sticks.
Let’s Fix That
Let’s fix that → turn your content into clients
